I also explain an important distinction: the County Treasurer doesn’t determine your property value or set your tax rate. The Treasurer collects and distributes the taxes based on information provided by other taxing authorities.

The Finance Department handles many of the county’s internal financial functions, including accounting, budgeting, financial reporting, and purchasing.
The Treasurer’s Office has a different role, including collecting and distributing property taxes, managing and investing public funds, and carrying out other responsibilities assigned to the Treasurer under Colorado law.
Understanding that distinction matters when evaluating the qualifications and responsibilities of your elected County Treasurer.

How Does a County Treasurer Invest Public Funds? | Treasurer’s Corner
What happens to public money after it reaches the County Treasurer—and can those funds be invested?
In this edition of Treasurer’s Corner, I explain how Colorado law allows county treasurers to responsibly invest public funds while keeping safety, liquidity, and the needs of the county at the forefront.
We look at some of the investment vehicles available under Colorado law, including U.S. Treasury securities, local government investment pools such as CSAFE and COLOTRUST, and eligible bank deposits and investment accounts.
The goal isn’t to speculate with taxpayer money. It’s to responsibly manage public funds, maintain the liquidity needed to meet the county’s obligations, and earn an appropriate return within the limits established by law.
As a candidate for Mesa County Treasurer, I believe taxpayers should understand not only where their money goes, but how it is safeguarded and managed while it is in the county’s care.
